Therapy & Mobility the miracle of conductive education

Step By Step

Conductive education (c/e) is a form of physical therapy that consists of simple repetitive exercises & therapy along with persistent stimulation & encouragement. This treatment works miracles with children who are challenged with cerebral palsy & other special needs where the muscles are frozen or spastic.

We have been helping Xinjiang orphanages implement c/e since the year 2000 and orphanage workers readily embraced the concepts. The children's carers are keen to increase their skills & pass on this knowledge to their colleagues. The results are so encouraging....Many children can now sit, stand, feed & dress themselves, grasp toys & write......children who might never have walked can.

Because c/e is low tech & requires only a few simple pieces of equipment & is easily passed on we know that it is feasible that we can reach many more of the needy children in Xin Jiang, not only those in orphanages but those in poor families too.

As well as the conductive education training we are also investing many resources for training caregivers in special education, occupational therapy and child development. We bring experts to Xinjiang and also send caregivers to inner China where other organisations hold training conferences.

Free 2 B U

Our vision remains to reach the waiting children in China's orphanages. We are always ready for encounters that will challenge us to make a difference. We continue to meet children of extraordinary resilience & dignity, these children are our inspiration for the Good Rock mission - 'Free 2 B U' launched in 2002.

Since the launch of Free 2 B U we have seen many children's lives transformed after medical treatment & surgery. We are extremely blessed to have our own Dr on staff. Dr Regula Amiet now continues to offer her onsultation from Switzerland. We also have excellent contacts with China's best hospitals and have been able to welcome other foreign experts for short term volunteer aid.

Hundred Family Jacket

In the countryside in a far corner of China, time stands still & traditions remain unchanged. In early summer the pears grow white & crisp, in July the first of the watermelons the juiciest anywhere sprout from their tangled vines. In late summer it is the time of the grapes the sweetest & muskiest you will find & startling fields of sunflowers that go on for as far as the eye can see. Only in the dead of winter do the fields lay at rest. On the muddy roads you will see lone donkey carts with their padded drivers & patient mules ride past quiet homesteads, smoke from the chimneys show that the kangs indoors are heated for the families who will sit out much of the quiet cold winter days on their toasty platforms.

At Lunar New Year red banners hail blessings for health wealth & happiness & the villages once more come back to life.

It was at this time of year that a young women prepared herself for the arrival of a daughter she would not keep as her own. This young women probably had little, she was also probably fearful of the events that lay ahead & no doubt to this day is forever changed by them.

In these remote corners of China an age old tradition still exists. When a woman is to give birth she & her own mother begin to collect 100 pieces of fabric to fashion a baby jacket called a biao jiao yi ?one hundred family jacket to bestow love & blessings on the new born child.

This young women had little to give her daughter but this humble legacy & it was this with which the child was found, prominently on the steps of a police station, thin, small but warmly wrapped in her biao jiao yi, every piece of cloth familiar to her China mummy and not least the 2nd button a half, sewn on closest to her heart, maybe to be matched one day to the half her mother kept.......

This precious little girl was united with her forever family at the age of 9 months to be not only loved & cherished by her family but to serve as witness that every child is precious & deserves a life of hope & opportunity. Welcome to the Good Rock Foundation the legacy of love for the children of China, inspired by the life of one precious child & her mother.

Meet Doctor Jutta

We were delighted to welcome to Xinjiang Dr Jutta a dentist from Berlin. Jutta was able to help children from 2 orphanages with much needed dental treatment. She performed many fillings & extractions on children who had never before been to see a dentist. The children had a mixture of fear & fascination with Jutta?'s skills but many were so pleased to get rid of toothache that had plagued them for a long time. Jutta left all of the children with good toothbrushes & toothpaste. In one town, the local dentist was so moved by Jutta?'s act of kindness that to this day they are continuing to treat the orphan children for free.

More Stories

Peng Peng captures the hearts of all who meet him. He has had the continual challenge of hydrocephalus for all of his young life & yet remains cheerful & brave. Donations from supporters have funded the surgeries that Peng Peng has needed. He is now a very active little boy and is attending local preschool.

A number of our supporters are familiar with Mihrigul's story. Abandoned as a baby after her father tried to kill her & maimed in both legs, Mihrigul was raised in a local sanatorium where she was treated with love & kindness but where her future held little hope for opportunities. My first encounter with Mihrigul was unforgettable, I was so impressed by the cheerfulness & dignity in this lovely young lady & hoped that Good Rock would be given permission to help her get on in life. Four years on Mihrigul qualified as a talented seamstress but still found getting around on her crutches limiting & uncomfortable. We offered Mihrigul the chance for a prosthetic leg & knowing this road would at first be painful she took some time to decide to go ahead. The lhealing process has been arduous however Mihrigul is now able to stand tall & walk with elegance. She is enjoying life at a womens' sewing co-operative and we sell the quilts that she makes.

Qi

Qi was abandoned in a department store & during his medical check was found to be HIV positive. At first Qi could not speak due to his trauma but once he found his voice he told us that his mother had died & his father gone after travelling from a far away province with Qi. We were able to find a loving foster grandma for Qi who is unconcerned with the stigma surrounding Qi's condition. With the help of The Clinton Foundation Qi became the first orphan recipient for HIV/AIDS treatment in Xinjiang. Some of his medication is free but his long term liver treatment & health screens are an expensive monthly commitment. Thank you to Nathalie Defoin & our supporters in Belgium for the funds raised for Qi who is now in much better health with a good prognosis. We hope to help more children like Qi.
