Good Rock’s first social enterprise project

Why This Project Is So Important

When the children reach the age the age of 18 they are required to leave the orphanages and are re-housed in state run institutions where they face a bleak future of institutionalisation and little stimulation. Good Rock children and young people are used to a more edifying way of life and we have been working with the provincial orphanage to take the lead in developing a business enterprise with housing for the disabled young people. This will keep them in community and give them a chance to be connected, contributing members of society.

The bakery is housed in the new group home built by the orphanage. We have been given two big, beautiful rooms on the 3^rd floor. The rooms have a bank of windows overlooking the stunning Tianshan mountains. The countryside setting is so peaceful & will be an excellent working environment. The bakery is created to be a self determined business, run by the young people for the young people, empowering them to lead lives of fulfilment and our aim is to grow the business enterprise to self sufficiency.

We’ll start the project with 8 young people from the orphanage. We see the potential to not only grow but to share our ideas with other orphanages and organisations so that more and more orphan young people can benefit.

Helping us to make it happen

Sandra & Arlette are two expatriate women have run a successful restaurant and café in the city since 2001. They are onboard as voluntary consultants helping us with baking skills, fitting out the bakery & future marketing. Juline is special ed teacher who is helping us assess and train the young people.

Juline brought her own kitchen tools and play dough for the assessments. Xue is a deaf & blind young man. Once shown how to roll & cut out cookie dough he was able to do this independently. He has such diligence and by using his sensitive hands was able to complete the task with not a scrap of waste! We’ll let you know when Xue’s cookies are for sale!
